Recently, the Workforce Institute shared the latest podcast in their series on Being Present: A Practical Guide for Transforming the Employee Experience of Your Frontline Workforce, between the WFI and David Creelman, CEO of Creelman Research, which is focused on helping HR leaders and CFOs manage and measure the productivity of their HR departments.
David’s chapter in “Being Present” - and his conversation with Joyce Maroney, former Executive Director of the WFI - focuses on the power of employee recognition at all levels in an organization, not only as a way to engage employees but also as a source of innovation and growth for the business.
One quote from David that stood out during the podcast: “Your employee experience initiative is not going to be sustainable if it’s not actually helping the company be successful”. Particularly during times of crisis, it can be tempting to think that recognition is a “nice-to-have” that can be easily shelved in favor of what may seem like more pressing imperatives. However, David argues, the things that ultimately drive business success - growth, profitability, productivity, quality, customer service - are inextricably linked to the experience of your employees.
David’s biggest piece of advice for listeners of the podcast and readers of his chapter: don’t frame the employee experience and the role that recognition plays in that as a philanthropic event. Developing and maintaining a recognition program is about boosting measurable outcomes for an organization. As David said, “a critical piece of the company’s success is how happy your employees are….it’s about harnessing their energy, enthusiasm and innovation of your workers.”
